That is Nelson Algren on the city of Chicago. The words might as well apply to the paintings of Robert Guinan (1934-2016), who spent most of his lifetime painting its people and places. Born in New York, he eventually made his way to Chicago in 1959 to study at the Art Institute, and then settled down to paint the harsh realities around him.
